President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has awarded Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.

The Presidential Decree No. 293 of 18 April 2021 ‘On the Russian Federation State Awards’ is published on the Russian official internet portal for legal information.

The Decree states, ‘For his considerable contribution to the development of international and inter-confessional relations, longstanding conscientious work, Grigory Valerievich Alfeyev (Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk), head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, be awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.
