Bishop Pitirim of Jakarta meets with the head of Indonesian diplomatic mission in Moscow

On 29th September 2020, Bishop Pitirim of Jakarta, vicar of the Singapore diocese, met with Mr. Azis Nurwahyudi, Charge d’affaires of the Republic of Indonesia to the Russian Federation.

Vladyka Pitirim told the Indonesian diplomat about the history of the Russian ecclesiastical presence in Indonesia, noting that the first parishes on the island of Java were opened in the 1930s under the jurisdiction of the Harbin diocese. The archpastor also drew Mr. Nurwahyudi’s attention to the present-day life of the Indonesian Orthodox community which consists, to a large extent, of this country’s citizens.

The participants in the meeting discussed a wide range of topics pertaining to the development of the Russian-Indonesian relations in the humanitarian sphere. Mr. Nurwahyudi shared his hope for the promotion of the interfaith dialogue between Russia and Indonesia, expressing joy over the election by the Holy Synod of the auxiliary Bishop of Jakarta who is entrusted to take archpastoral care of the Orthodox Indonesian communities of the Russian tradition.

Taking part in the meeting were also Mr. Adiguna Wijaya, Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Russian Federation; Mr. Dmitry Petrovsky, staff member of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; and diplomats of the Indonesian Embassy.
