The main festivities were traditionally held in the Kazan Monastery of the Mother of God, the place wh ere the miracle-working Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God appeared in 1579.

The Divine Liturgy at the monastery’s restored Kazan Cathedral was celebrated by Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan, Metropolitan Niphon of Philippople, representative of the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; Bishop Anthony of Moravici, representative of the Patriarch of Serbia to the Patriarch of Moscow; Bishop Gedeon of Makarov, vicar of the diocese of Kiev; Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America; Bishop Mefody of Almetyevsk and Bugulma; and Bishop Innocent of Yelabuga, vicar of the diocese of Kazan.

Among Metropolitan Kirill’s concelebrants were also clerics of Local Orthodox Churches, including the Orthodox Church of the Czech Land and Slovakia, the Orthodox Church in America, the Georgian Orthodox Church, as well as staff members of the Metropolitan of Tatarstan and the Kazan Theological Seminary in holy orders, abbots, deans and rectors in the Metropolis of Tatarstan.

The liturgical hymns were sung by three church choirs.

Among the worshippers were abbesses, representatives of church organizations, seminarians, representatives of Orthodox youth organizations, parishioners of other churches in Kazan and pilgrims.

The preventive measures against the spread of the coronavirus infection were monitored by young people from the Kazan Orthodox Volunteers. The service was broadcast by the Tatarstan - Novyi Vek republican TV channel and the Soyuz TV channel and streamed by the Pravoslavie v Tatarstane (Orthodoxy in Tatarstan) portal.

After the Great Entrance, Bishop Leonid of Argentine and South America, at a request of Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan, ordained Deacon Artemy Lushkin from the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Kazan as priest.

The sermon after the Prayer behind the Ambo was delivered by Archpriest Alexy Chubakov, dean of the Kazan district.

After the dismissal, the archpastors, clergy and faithful walked in a procession with the cross around the church, carrying the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and singing prayers to the Queen of Heaven. In conclusion of the procession, Metropolitan Kirill addressed the participants. He thanked the representatives of Local Orthodox Churches who came for the festivities.

Metropolitan Niphon of Philippople addressed the head of the Metropolis of Tatarstan and all those present, saying, “Your Eminence, we sincerely thank you for the opportunity to celebrate the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in this holy place, to pray together with you and to feel your love for us and our peoples. In the Divine Liturgy, we testified to the unity of our Churches in the spirit of peace. We prayed for the unity of the whole Orthodox world and that the Lord may preserve us and put an end to this terrible epidemic. We prayed for the Primates of our Churches, especially for His Holiness Patriarch Kirill under whose patronage we all live. We lifted up prayers for the Republic of Tatarstan, for the President, for the leaders of the republic and the country. May the Lord strengthen us all through the intercession of His Most Holy Mother so that we could feel the Orthodox unity and support each other. May the Lord give the people of our country so dear to us a peaceful life and prosperity!”

After the service, the president of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov arrived to the cathedral to meet with Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan and representatives of Local Orthodox Churches who took part in the church festivities.
