On November 6, 2021, Patriarchal Exarch for Western Europe Metropolitan Anthony of Chersonesus and Western Europe, who had come to Lebanon for the celebrations devoted to the 75th anniversary of the Beirut Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church, met with Metropolitan Elias of Beirut, the Orthodox Church of Antioch.

They were joined by Metropolitan Niphon of Philippople, representative of the Patriarch of Antioch to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; Bishop Anthony of Moravici, representative of the Patriarch of Serbia to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; Archimandrite Seraphim (Shemyatovsky), representative of the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; Archimandrite Philipp (Vasiltsev), rector of the Beirut Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church; Mr. A. I Skopenko, head of the Foundation for the Support of Christian Culture and Heritage; and Prof Archpriest Vladislav Tsypin, PhD, Moscow Theological Academy.

Metropolitan Elias warmly welcomed the guests and pointed to the importance of the visit of Metropolitan Anthony to Lebanon for maintaining friendly relations.

His Eminence Anthony, on his part, noted that it was his first visit to Lebanon and thanked Metropolitan Elias for the opportunity to pray in the Lebanese land.

His Eminence Elias told the guests about the devastation of the city caused last year by the blast in the port. Among the damaged buildings was the residence of the Metropolitan of Beirut, which was later restored with the support of Russian benefactors.

The interlocutors stressed the importance of the unity of Orthodoxy and consolidation of fraternal relations between the Patriarchates of Antioch and Moscow.

In memory of the meeting, Metropolitan Elias presented the guests with copies of the book written by his spiritual patron St. Porphyrius, entitled “Miracles of Love. Life and Wisdom”. Metropolitan Anthony presented the Lebanese archpastor with a pectoral icon.

After the meeting, the guests, who came for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Beirut Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church, visited the St. George Cathedral of the Metropolis of Beirut. According to tradition, the church was erected at the place where Great Martyr George the Conqueror killed the Dragon. In the crypt of the cathedral, there is a museum with artefacts of the early Christian centuries including Byzantine mosaics.
