The Orthodox Church is standing on the brink of a grave schism owing to the situation in Ukraine, as Metropolitan Anthony of Borispol and Brovary, chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, believes. The hierarch’s commentary has been published by ‘Pershiy Koztskiy’ channel, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

‘The Universal Orthodox Church is facing a grave crisis’, Metropolitan Anthon said explaining the tasks of the international conference on ‘The Conciliarity of the Church: Theological, Canonical and Historical Dimensions’, which took place in the Kiev Theological Academy and Seminary, ‘And today we can openly say that we are standing on the brink of a grave schism owing to the situation in Ukraine - the illegal anti-canonical actions made by Patriarch Bartholomew with regard to the Ukrainian schismatics. And so, the Orthodox Church is finding a way to prevent crossing over the brink so that the grave schism may not happen’.

The Church is searching for answers in her history, the hierarch elucidated.

He said that the reflection-action conference in Kiev was attended by representatives of eleven Local Churches. In their historical analyses, they identified precedents of schisms, indicated the procedures used by the Orthodox Church to admit schismatics to the Eucharistic communion. Special attention was given to the canonical fundamentals, the foundation of the Church, violated by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople by granting the so-called ‘tomos’ to the Ukrainian schismatics.
