On December 11, 2021, with a blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel of Odessa and Izmail, a round-table conference was held in Odessa Theological Seminary on Pressing Problems of Orthodox World Community Today. The event was held as part of the theological discussion of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the consequence of Patriarch Bartholomew’s interference in the affairs of Ukrainian Orthodox community.

In introductory remarks, His Eminence Agafangel noted, “The invasion of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople into Ukraine in 2018, where the universally recognized canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church has carried out her intransient mission for centuries, has become a violation of the canonical order, a violation having dangerous and grave consequences which can aggravate the state of affairs among Local Orthodox Church. This situation has provoked a crisis in Orthodoxy, historically similar to the events which took place before the great schism in Christianity in the 11th century”.

At the roundtable meeting, lecturers of the Odessa Theological Seminary read papers on the following themes: “Consequences of the unlawful interference of the Patriarch of Constantinople in the affairs of the UOC within the boundaries of the Diocese of Odessa”, “The doctrine of the unity of the Church in today’s theological polemic”, “The doctrine of the catholicity of the Church against the background of today’s ecclesial crisis”, “A history of titling the Patriarch of Constantinople”.

In conclusion of the conference, Metropolitan Agafangel summarised the theses of the speakers and specially pointed out the importance of preserving the church unity in today’s situation.
