On December 13, 2021, the 60th anniversary of the passing away of Metropolitan Nikolay (Yarushevich) of Krutitsy and Kolomna, the brethren of the St. Sergius Laura of the Holy Trinity held the Office of the Dead at his burial place at the crypt of the church of Our Lady of Smolensk, Patriarchia.ru reports with reference to the Laura’s website.

The name of Metropolitan Nikolay always continued to be heard even by those in the USSR who were far from Orthodoxy. Along with Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) and Metropolitan Alexis (Simansky), he participated in the historic meeting with Stalin on September 4, 1943. It was also due to his gift as a church diplomat that the Soviet government transferred to the Patriarchate a building in Chisty Pereulok, allowed to elect the Patriarch, to restore church schools and to have surviving pastors released from camps.

Metropolitan Nikolay was a permanent member of the revived Holy Synod. He made a substantial contribution to the resumption of the “Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate”; he headed the publishing work of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Due to the high level of his personal erudition, His Eminence Nikolay was elected the first chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. He was Doctor of Divinity honoris causa of the Jan Hus Theological Evangelical Faculty in Prague, the Sofia Theological Academy, the Theological Academy of the Hungarian Reformed Church, the Orthodox Theological Institute in Bucharest and the Protestant Theological Institute in Cluj,

On December 13, 1961, His Eminence passed away to the Lord at the age of 70. The funeral service took place on December 15 at the Refectory Church of the St. Sergius Laura of the Holy Trinity. The burial service in the crypt of the Laura’s Church of Our Lady of Smolensk was led by Patriarch Alexis I.
