On December 19, 2021, after the Divine Liturgy on the commemoration day of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, met with the Mayor of Bari, Mr. Antonio Decaro.

Metropolitan Hilarion greeted his interlocutor on behalf of His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, pointing to the significant role played by Mr. Decaro in organizing the bringing of parts of the relics of St. Nicholas to Russia in 2017. His Eminence also stressed that the Russian Orthodox Church traditionally maintains direct contacts with the administration of the city, which has a great importance for developing Orthodox pilgrimage.

In his turn, the Mayor of Bari shared the remembrances of his trip to Russia in the days when the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were in Moscow and expressed confidence that the shared veneration of the great man of God is a guarantee of the development of relations between Apulia and countries in the zone of canonical responsibility of the Moscow Patriarchate.

During their prolonged talk, the sides discussed a number of issues concerning the current interaction.

In conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Decaro presented Metropolitan Hilarion with a copy of the inextinguishable icon-lamp burning at the relics of St. Nicholas. The DECR chairman left a note in the book for honorary guests and presented the mayor of Bari with a token of the meeting.
