Inter-religious working group for the protection of the rights of believers from discrimination and xenophobia sends humanitarian aid to Syria

Between 13th and 16th of December 2021 the inter-religious group for the protection of the rights of believers fr om discrimination and xenophobia under the Russian Presidential Council for Interaction with Religious Associations was in Damascus and Tartus distributing humanitarian aid.

The humanitarian cargo was assembled by Christians and Muslims of Russia and sent to Syria under the auspices of the Russian defense ministry and the Fighters’ Brotherhood organization. The Arab Diaspora in Russia organization and volunteers fr om the New Saviour Orthodox Youth Centre at New Saviour Monastery in Moscow helped with putting the aid together. The inter-religious working group included in its delegation for the distribution of aid in Syria the imam-muhtasib of Nizhnekamsk and the Nizhnekamsk region of the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims in the republic of Tatarstan Salih Hasrat Ibragimov and the chairman of the regional branch of the Arab Diaspora in Russia organization Hassan Faez Nasrallah.

On 13th December the members of the delegation met with the Syrian minister for education Dr. Darim Tabaa. The sides discussed issues of mutual interaction and agreed upon further cooperation and interaction in the humanitarian sphere, the basis of which was the setting up of the inter-religious group in 2019 at the secondary school in Barsa in Damascus.

On 14th December the members of the working group visited the school in Barsa that had been restored on money donated by religious communities in Russia. The children and teachers were given a large consignment of footwear. There was a meeting with the heads of the school and workers at the Syrian ministry of education. Taking part in the distribution of humanitarian aid was the official of the Department of the Patriarchate of Antioch for External Church Relations and Development Father George Daoud. Chairs for the use of the assembly hall of the school in Barsa, where there around 1200 students, were also presented to the school.

On the same day, together with the Syrian minister for education Dr. Darim Tabaa and representatives of the ministry, the members of the delegation visited the Ar-Rahman children’s home wh ere they met with the directors of the home and the children, who gave the guests a warm welcome. The members of the inter-religious group became acquainted with the living conditions for the children and how they were taught. This children’s home is to be included in the list of targets for humanitarian aid via the inter-religious working group.

On 15th December the delegation arrived in Tartus wh ere they visited the Dar ul Aman boarding school for children of Syrian military personnel who had died. The guests met with the heads of the school, the students and teachers, and with state officials and media representatives. They donated to the students of the school 500 items of sportswear made in Russia.

The inter-religious working group for the protection of the rights of believers against discrimination and xenophobia under the Russian Presidential Council for Interaction with Religious Associations was set up in July of 2021 on the basis of the inter-religious working group for humanitarian aid to the people of Syria, which had been active since 2017. With the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, the director of the working group, which brings together representatives of both the Christian and Muslim communities in Russia, is secretary of the Department for External Church Relations hieromonk Stephan (Igumnov). The working group acts under the aegis of the aforementioned Russian Presidential Council which, for its part, expresses its involvement through the official of Russian Presidential Administration for Internal Politics A. V. Tretyakov.

The working group is tasked with monitoring the situation with regard to believers’ rights in various regions of the world and with adopting measures aimed at protecting them and sending them aid.
