Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk meets with Archbishop Giuseppe Satriano of Bari-Bitonto

On December 19, 2021, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, met with Archbishop Giuseppe Satriano of Bari-Bitonto, at the Dominican monastery attached to the St. Nicholas Basilica in Bari. 

The DECR chairman congratulated Monsignor Satriano on his appointment to the episcopal see of the city of Bari, expressing hope that the high level of cooperation with the Russian Orthodox Church reached under his predecessor Archbishop Francesco Cacucci will be uphold in the future. He introduced his interlocutor to the history of cooperation between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto, the special veneration gained by St. Nicholas in the Russian Church and annual pilgrimages made by Orthodox believers from Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Moldova and other countries under the canonical responsibility of the Moscow Patriarchate in Bari. His Eminence gave a special attention to the bringing of St. Nicholas’s relics to Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2017. 

In his turn, Monsignor Satriano thanked His Eminence Hilarion for the opportunity to meet, which made it possible for them to outline plans for further common work. 

They discussed various aspects of the Orthodox-Catholic cooperation of mutual concern. 

In conclusion, Metropolitan Hilarion and Archbishop Giuseppe Satriano exchanged tokens of the meeting.
