On December 20, 2021, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, during his working visit to the Italian region of Apulia, delivered a lecture at the Free Mediterranean University (LUM) on the present state and prospects of interreligious dialogue.

At the university entrance, His Eminence was welcomed by the Governor of Apulia Mr M. Emiliano, Archbishop Giovanni Ricchiuti of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti, and the rector of the LUM University Prof Antonello Garzoni.

Having visited the rector’s office, Metropolitan Hilarion proceeded to the assembly hall, where he opened the work of a conference devoted to the pressing aspects of interreligious dialogue.

The event was attended by numerous representatives of the Apulia regional authorities, members of the Parliaments of the Republic of Italy, city mayors, leaders of the Association of Medical Workers of Italy, the clergy of the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto and Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti, professors and students of the university. Due to the impossibility for all those who wished to listen to the lecture to be accommodated in the assembly hall because of the restrictions in force, a live stream was arranged from the conference.

After the official greetings of the regional governor, the university rector and Monsignor Giovanni Ricchiuti, Metropolitan Hilarion was presented with the university seal according to the Italian practice as a sign of the acknowledgement of the special merits of the DECR chairman in the area of interreligious dialogue and inter-cultural interaction.

Then His Eminence delivered a lectio magistralis devoted to the Orthodox understanding of interreligious dialogue, its present situation and significance for ensuring the peaceful co-existence of the nations. In his lecture, His Eminence Hilarion dwelt separately on the organization of interreligious cooperation in Russia, pointing to the topicality of the accumulated experience for foreign states.

In the end of the lecture, Metropolitan Hilarion answered questions from reporters of national and local mass media.
