Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia: We will continue giving support to Metropolitan Onufry and his Church

Touching upon the situation in Ukraine in his interview to Mezhdunarodnaya zhizn (International life) magazine, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia stressed, “We will not change our position. We give and continue giving considerable support to Metropolitan Onufry and his Church”.

In the upheavals of the late 20th century, which involved the disintegration of states, “the enemies of Orthodoxy - but I would say the enemies of Christianity - saw an opportunity to split up autocephalous or autonomous Churches”, noted the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

“Therefore, we understand well what is going on in Ukraine”, Patriarch Porfirije said, “Therefore, we highly appreciate the way in which Patriarch Alexy of blessed memory steered the boat of the Russian Church in those stormy and hard times, as well as the way Patriarch Kirill - I boldly say it - is triumphantly leading it in the third millennium. The broadest freedom, the full autonomy in governance, which the Russian Orthodox Church gave to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, is an example of showing the highest oiconomy and church consciousness”.

The point was raised in the interview concerning possible ways of overcoming the grave situation which developed after the decision made by the Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to support the Ukrainian schismatics.

“Contrary to the striking ease in which the Patriarchate of Constantinople ignored holy canons, ecclesiology, the ages-old order of the Orthodox Church, the Holy Tradition, we essentially - just as, I am convinced, the sister Russian Orthodox Church - do not refuse to love the Mother Church and hope that the day will come, and it will as soon as possible, when the non-Orthodox, anti-church influence and non-ecclesial projects - which, as I can see, have brought nothing good in Ukraine either, and when we all in the spirit of conciliarity will come back to fraternal love and to pan-Orthodox resolution of all problems”, the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church emphasized.
