On 28th January 2022, the members of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church adopted the minutes published below, having discussed them by means of remote communication.

MINUTES No. 1

GAVE CONSIDERATION to the Announcement issued by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria concerning the establishment of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Background Information:

At its session held on 29th December 2021 (Minutes No. 100) the Holy Synod stated that is was no longer possible to refuse the clerics of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria who wished to join the Moscow Patriarchate for the reason of recognition of the Ukrainian schism by His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria. At that same meeting, the Synod received into the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church 102 clerics of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and established the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, appointing His Eminence Metropolitan Leonid of Klin as its head.

On 12th January 2022, the Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria published the Announcement, calling the actions of the Russian Orthodox Church an “incursion” into the canonical territory of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria and distorting the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the Exarchate of Africa.

RESOLVED to adopt a statement of the Holy Synod.
