“Pope Francis of Rome is speaking out about the Ukrainian topic in a very balanced way because he is aware of not only the present history of the conflict but also its pre-history, which goes back to the events of 2014”, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk stated on the air of the Church and the World program.

The DECR chairman said that he is directly involved in the preparation of the meeting to take place between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill in 2022, but its exact date and venue is still being worked out.

“In the present complex political situation, a very thorough consideration should be given not only to issues concerning the substantial part of the meeting of the Pope and the Patriarch, but also issues concerning security, transportation and logistics”, Metropolitan Hilarion explained.

Originally, the meeting between the heads of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church was planned to take place where the Christian population needs support. Therefore, the Middle East is considered one of the priority venues for this meeting, the DECR chairman added.
