The faithful in the city of Chertkov, Ternopol region, Ukraine, the city authorities of which declared on April 22 a need to banish the canonical Church, made an appeal to local officials. As was reported earlier, Mayor Vladimir Shmatko expressed a conviction that there should not be the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the city while the local parish should in the nearest future “move to the ‘OCU’ in a democratic in and civilized manner”.

In their appeal, the parishioners of the church of Our Lady ‘Help the Weak’ point out that as the parish numbers over one hundred people, with most of them being the residents of Chertkov, so the authority appears to oppose the interests of townspeople.

“You, dear Deputies, while writing it beautifully on paper that you stand for our renouncing our faith ‘in a democratic manner’, in personal talks you incite ordinary people of our city to hate us. Presently,, townspeople write under some of your posts that our Church should be closed and we should be disposed of - physically”, the appeal states.

The parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the city of Chertkov urged to “stop religious wrangling and discord” and to show to the whole world that local people are able “to live in peace”, to coexist as friends and to respect each other”.

As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reports with reference to the information from members of the parish community, the appeal was accepted and registered in the city council.
