Bishop Nikanor of Banat: May the Lord preserve the holy Kiev Lavra of the Caves

28 March 2023 year 11:26

Having learnt that the Ukraine’s authorities intend to take the Kiev Lavra of the Caves away from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and ‘turn it into some other object’, Bishop Nikanor of Banat, a hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, sent a letter to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, expressing ‘the most sincere regret for so sad a news’.

He also expressed support for Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine, the episcopate, clergy, monastics and all the faithful people of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. ‘We pray to the Resurrected Lord so that He may preserve the holy Lavra of the Caves with all its monks and novices headed by the abbot - His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel with the brethren of the monastery, the rector of Kiev Theological Academy, students and seminarians, so that in this year of the Lord too ‘Christ is Risen…’ will be sung in the Holy Kiev Lavra of the Caves…’ Bishop Nikanor writes in his letter.
