On 5th September 2023 a cleric of the ‘Orthodox сhurch of Ukraine’ by the name of Vitaly Matiyaschuk, together with other persons unknown, at around six o’clock in the morning broke off the locks and entered into the Church of the Protecting Veil of the Virgin in the microregion of Bortnychi in Kiev, reports the website of the Soyuz pravoslavnykh zhurnalistov with a link to the church’s page on social media.

A video clip which has appeared on social media shows how a number of young people with yellow armbands, as well as people in combat fatigues, were to be found on the territory of the church. They had closed the entrance gates by hanging a chain on them. One of the raiders assured the faithful that they would no longer be able to visit their church.

The community of the Church of the Protecting Veil of the Virgin that has been seized by the schismatics has decided to hold a prayer vigil by the church gates, said the church rector Father Alexy Hodun.

“We have taken a decision to hold a prayer vigil and each day celebrate the Divine Liturgy by the gates of our church,” said the priest.

The service will begin at eight o’clock.

“We invite everyone to participate in our prayer. We will prayerfully defend our holy sites,” said Father Alexy.
