The metropolitan of Volokolamsk Hilarion believes that the blessing of the Patriarch and the presence of an Orthodox priest alongside them at the Olympic games is an important factor for the Olympians and Paralympians. “Most of our sportsmen and women are believing Orthodox Christians. They have a special need for pastoral support as they harness all their strength to obtain victory,” said the metropolitan on the Church and the World TV programme.

The metropolitan indicated that the Church devotes serious attention to the issues of the spiritual care of sportsmen, emphasizing in particular the role played by the Patriarchal Commission for Sport and Physical Education.

Speaking of the interaction between the Olympians and the priest Father Andrei Alexeyev who has joined the team at the Olympic games in Beijing, the metropolitan noted: “I have no doubt that our priest, who has great experience in working with sportsmen, will give them not only spiritual but also moral and psychological support. And the millions of fans who follow the successes of our sportsmen will of course add to their strength and give them self-confidence.”
