Arson attack on a Ukrainian Orthodox church in Chernigov region

In the early morning hours of August 21, 2023, the church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Khalyavin, Chernigov region, was badly damaged by fire.

Experts point out that the scene bore all the marks of deliberate act. The firefighters’ initial conclusion is the same. The canister with gasoline residues testifies to arson, the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reports with reference to the press service of the Diocese of Chernigov.

80 sq meters of the roof and 20 sq meters of the ceiling sustained great damage as well as structural elements of the walls. All church utensils inside the building were damaged by water or covered with soot.

The fire destroyed the bell tower, the old bell that was cast before the Revolution, and four modern bells recently purchased at the expense of the community.
