By tradition, Russian clergymen in the Holy Land led by the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem celebrate Divine Liturgy at the Tomb of the Mother of God in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to the Feast of the Dormition.

On August 24, 2023, many Russian-speaking faithful from Jerusalem and neighboring towns attended the traditional “Russian Liturgy” at the Tomb of the Most Pure Theotokos celebrated by Archimandrite Alexander (Yelisov), head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission. Assisting were sacristans and workers of the Mission’s metochions, clerics of the Gorny Convent archpriest Miroslav Vitiv, hegumen Nikon (Golovko), archpriest Nikolai Zhdanov, hieromonk Innokenty (Bespalov), hieromonk Dometian (Markaryan), and Rev.Viktor Klinshov, as well as clergymen from the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and ordained pilgrims.

Among those praying at the divine service were Metropolitan Joachim of Helenopolis, Hegumen of Gethsemane; hegumeness Yekaterina (Chernysheva) of the Gorny convent in Ein Karem, and sisters; hegumeness Iuliania (Kaleda) of the Conception stauropegic convent in Moscow, and sisters; hegumeness Viktorina (Perminova) of the Nativity of the Virgin stauropegic convent, and sisters; monks from the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre; Russian-speaking Orthodox Christians residing in the Holy Land, and pilgrims.

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Greek and Church Slavonic languages with brethren of the Gethsemane monastery and sisters of the Gorny convent singing.

After the divine service, Metropolitan Joachim invited Russian clergymen to veranda that offers the Old City view. He shared with them a traditional ‘Jerusalem’ breakfast consisting of moderately cold water, fresh bread, spiced olive oil, Arabic sweets, and coffee. At parting, Metropolitan Joachim and Archimandrite Alexander exchanged souvenirs.
