Russian Church representative participates in Christmas Liturgy at Dormition Cathedral in Damascus

On December 25, 2023, Feast of the Nativity of Christ according to the Revised Julian calendar, Archimandrite Philip (Vasiltsev), representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ to the Patriarchal Throne of Antioch, took part in the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Damascus at the invitation of His Beatitude Patriarch John X of the Great Antioch and All the East.

His Beatitude officiated at the Liturgy. Concelebrating with him were Bishop John (Batash) of Sergiopolis and the Damascus clergy.

The liturgical languages were Arabic, Church Slavonic and Greek, the Russian Orthodox Church’s Representation in Damascus reports.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Antioch delivered a Christmas homily.

At the end of the Liturgy, Archimandrite Philip expressed his warm Christmas wishes to His Beatitude Patriarch John and conveyed to him greetings from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ and the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk. He also handed over to His Beatitude a Christmas gift – holy panagia.
