A Round Table on Traditions of Orthodoxy in China: Losses and Gains of the Past and an Image of the Future will take place in Moscow on 23rd January 2024 with the blessing of Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR). The meeting will be held within the framework of the 32nd International Christmas Educational Readings as part of the programme entitled “Tradition. Dialogue. External Relations.”

Hieromonk Kirill (Peregudin) of the DECR Secretariat for Far Abroad Countries will act as moderator. The round table will bring together clergymen, scholars and university professors.

Among the topics to be raised during the meeting are translations of the Holy Scripture into the Chinese language and their reception, psychological challenges of translating Orthodoxy-related texts into Chinese and attempts to overcome them, as well as Russian-Chinese liturgical dictionaries. The participants in the meeting will also discuss the Chinese practice of architectural localization of religious buildings, misconceptions about Orthodox faith that may be found in Chinese society, special aspects of Chinese mentality to be considered when creating an Orthodox community, and online mission in the Chinese language and its prospects. Speakers will focus, among other things, on the history of the Ecclesiastical Mission in Peking (Beijing) and translations it had done, which are now kept in various collections in Russia and China.
