XV Russia Abroad Film Festival Opens in Moscow

The XV Russia Abroad International Film Festival opened on 7th November 2021 at the Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russia Abroad. 

The festival has been up and running since 2007 and it hosts competition for feature and documentary films, the purpose of which is to acquaint viewers with films on the cultural and scientific heritage of the Russian abroad, the history of the First World War, the coup d’état in 1917 and the Russian civil war, Russian exile, the life of compatriots abroad and the problems of emigration as a whole. Since the festival’s existence more than 550 feature and documentary by directors from within Russia and from abroad have been shown.

The main founders and organizers of the festival are the House of Russia Abroad and the Russky put film studio with the support of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian ministry for culture, the Department for culture for the city of Moscow, the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo), the Department for External Affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Moscow City Duma.

The opening ceremony of the film festival was attended by figures from the Russian and foreign cinema world who in their works highlight the historical and cultural aspects of the Russian emigration, historians, diplomats and public figures.

The organizers and participants of the film festival were greeted by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the Russian minister for culture Olga Lyubimova, the chairman pf the World Coordinating Council for Russian Compatriots M.V. Drozdov and the president of the Congress of Russian Americans N. Sabelnik.

A message of greetings by the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate the metropolitan of Volokolamsk Hilarion was read aloud to the participants and guests of the festival by assistant at the secretariate of the DECR for the distant abroad hieromonk Kirill (Peredugin). 

This year’s film festival will show fifty-one films from nine countries from around the world, that is, Belarus, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, USA, Ukraine, Finland France and Switzerland.

Part of the films on show are devoted to the issues of faith and religion, in particular: People of Bread (2021, directed by F. Babenko) on the everyday life of the Orthodox community on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, and Monk Ambrosius: Butovo Requiem (directed by Ye. Krichko, 2020), which tells of the ‘Russian Calvary’ through the words of the victims of repression.

The festival will also show the films Orthodox in Japan, The Bishop (to celebrate the 55th birthday of the metropolitan of Volokolamsk Hilarion), A Nativity Encounter with Metropolitan Laurus on the fifth First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Mother Maria: The Return Home (to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of nun Maria Skobtsova, And lest no one take your joy from you… (to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the birth of the hieromartyr Pavel Ansimova) and The Artist: Sister Joanna (to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of archpriest Sergei Bulgakov).

The film festival will be broadcast simultaneously online on the official site cinema-ro.com, which will allow viewers throughout the world to watch the films.

The Russia Abroad Abroad Film Festival will last until 14th November.
