On December 11, 2021, a delegation of the Foundation for Support of Christian Culture and Heritage led by the Foundation executive director Ye. I. Skopenko visited the Diocese of Bialystok and Gdansk of the Polish Orthodox Church. The delegation was accompanied by A. Yu. Khoshev, a staff member of the DECR Secretariat for Inter-Orthodox Relations.

Archbishop Jakub of Bialystok and Gdansk warmly welcomed the guests fr om Russia and gave a dinner in their honour at his residence in Bialystok. During their talk, Mr. Skopenko introduced the hierarch of the Polish Orthodox Church to the history of the establishment and statute aims of the Foundation and the charitable work it carries out in various Local Orthodox Churches. Archbishop Jakub said he was glad to meet a representative of the DECR and a delegation the Foundation for Support of Christian Culture and Heritage and shared the remembrances of his study at the Moscow Theological Academy from 1987 to 1992. The archpastor also told the guests about the history of the Diocese of Bialystok and Gdansk and its present situation and the development of various aspects of the diocesan life.

Participating in the meeting were also the rector of the Church of St. Sophia in Warsaw, Archpriest Adam Semeniuk, Protodeacon Mark Lopatiuk, a cleric of the same church, and Mr. A. Kachan, a staff member of the Diocese of Bialystok and Gdansk office.

On the same day, with a blessing of Archbishop Jakub, the guests visited the Monastery of the Annunciation in Suprasl (16th cent.), the abbot of which, Bishop Andrey of Suprasl, introduced the guests to the history of the Suprasl Monastery and stressed its outstanding significance for Orthodoxy in Poland. The archpastor showed the guests the monastery’s Cathedral of the Annunciation and the repair and restoration work carried out in the monastery, as well as the library, classrooms and other facilities intended for realising missionary, training, academic and pilgrimage projects.

During their visit to Bialystok, the delegation visited the St. Nicholas Cathedral built in 1843-1846, wh ere they venerated the relics of the Holy Infant Martyr Gabriel of Bialystok. Then they came to the Church of the Holy Spirit, which was built in the period from 1982 to 1999. They were taken on a tour of the church by its rector Archpriest George Borechko. They also saw the studio of the radio station “Faith” attached to the church.

In Bialystok, the delegation also met with the rector of the Church of St. John the Theologian under construction, Archpriest Marek Vavreniuk, who took them to the construction site of the future church. They also venerated the shrines of the Church of St. Nicholas of Serbia.
